About Bananito Village and the Hidden Paradise ‘Jungle in Banaga’
Bananito is a secluded village, far removed from the typical tourist path, where the focus is primarily on bananas. Significant companies like Dole, Chiquita, and Del Monte provide many low-skill jobs in the area. However, as you follow the Bananito River upstream, nature increasingly takes center stage.
Just 4 miles up the river lies the tiny village of Banaga, where most locals live off their farms, and tourism is almost nonexistent. Our meeting point is the local bar, Monterrey, from where we’ll cross the river to reach our property.
Here, you’ll find a true “green paradise,” spanning 300 acres, from the river’s edge deep into the primary rainforest. My neighbor, Johnny Abraham, who grew up on the opposite side of the river, is where I, known as “The Dutch Biologist of Cahuita,” first discovered the beauty of the Bananito area and jungle life. Johnny, whose father is Spanish and mother is from the Bribri indigenous group, comes from a family known for their farming expertise.
Over ten years, during my visits and stays, Johnny taught me how to build a house and grow food, and we spent many evenings reflecting on life beyond its material aspects. Eventually, I bought 80 acres of lush jungle next to his land, and now we guide visitors together on our combined 300 acres of rainforest.
Along the riverside, there’s a spot to barbecue or jump into the current from a nearby ridge. Johnny, his wife, and his daughter live in a large wooden rancho with a thatched roof, where you’ll be welcomed, meals will be prepared, and we’ll get ready for our first adventure.
From their garden, a trail leads into the secondary rainforest, farmland about 40 years ago but has since transformed into a thriving wilderness. Trees proliferate in this tropical climate, and the trail becomes narrower as the atmosphere denser.
As we venture further, the humidity makes you sweat, and the sounds of the jungle heighten your senses. If it rains, you’ll experience the rainforest in its true essence. Stay alert as we head toward the foothills of the Caribbean slope; anything could happen—perhaps even a glimpse of a jaguar.
In the distance, the sound of a waterfall grows louder, signaling that our destination is near. A refreshing plunge beneath the cascading water awaits.
About the Finca of the Jungle and Farm Tour
Van Maare is the name of our organic farm located near Bananito, Costa Rica, spanning 300 acres of primary and secondary rainforest (in conjunction with our neighboring farm, Finca Tayku Land).
Of the total area, about 40 acres are primarily forested, with just 8 acres cleared for living and growing food. The farm stretches from the riverside of Bananito to the mountain ridge, making fencing unnecessary.
Our farming practices at Van Maare are deeply rooted in sustainability. We cultivate a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables, with cacao and bananas as our main products. Other crops include pineapples, citrus, cassava, katana, starfruit, and avocados, along with many naturally occurring medicinal plants and fruits. Most of our produce is for personal use, some for wildlife, and a small portion is sold, all grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Due to the steep terrain, which ranges from riverside to mountain ridge, the soil and vegetation vary greatly, supporting a wide diversity of plants. We have identified flat areas at different elevations ideal for building and planting, much like the indigenous settlers did long ago.
We maintain footpaths throughout the farm and constantly create new microhabitats, such as ponds, to attract more wildlife. We aim to observe and support as much flora and fauna as possible. We’ve planted plantains, cassava, and corn near the river, which thrive in the fertile soil periodically nourished by river floods. These crops grow alongside a pioneer forest of giant Balsa trees, known for being the lightest wood in the world.
Further uphill, we’ve planted numerous fruit trees that do well in clay soils and lower light conditions. The abundant food supply attracts various birds and mammals like Cherengas and Armadillos. As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes denser, leading to secondary rainforest areas with large hardwood trees like Katcha, Cedro, and Nispelro, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife.
Since acquiring the land in 2008, we have prohibited hunting and tree-cutting for sale. As a result, nature has thrived, with signs of large predators like jaguars, whose claw marks we’ve found in the primary rainforest. Our land remains well-protected, and the ecosystem continues to grow and flourish.
