Tortuguero Canal – Wildlife, Flora and Fauna
The Tortuguero canal is a bustling ecosystem, teeming with life. It’s common to see herons, egrets, kingfishers, anhingas, jacanas, and other wildlife. Frequently observed creatures include basilisk lizards, bats, sloths, iguanas, various poison dart frogs, and howler, white-faced, and spider monkeys, showcasing the incredible diversity and abundance of life in this unique habitat.
You may find tracks of river otters, collared peccaries, and Baird’s tapirs along the riverbanks and canals. The waterways are inhabited by caimans, garfish, manatees, crocodiles, crustaceans, and occasionally bull sharks.
About Cahuita National Park
Our experienced tour guides offer a range of adventurous activities, including wildlife tours, hiking, and trekking. The park is also home to the largest fringing coral reef in Costa Rica’s Caribbean, which is protected and can only be accessed with a licensed tour guide. This reef, stretching 5 km from Punta Cahuita’s western side to the east, features three barriers and is separated from the shore by 100 meters to 2 miles.
The coral reef is a nesting ground for sea turtles and teeming with marine life. When snorkeling or scuba diving, you’ll encounter over 240 aquatic species, including tropical fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, manta rays, and even three types of sharks. The reef boasts at least 35 species of coral, over 120 fish species, and numerous mollusks and crustaceans.
About Cahuita National Park Wildlife
One of the most striking reptiles is the yellow eyelash pit viper, known for its vivid golden-yellow color.
The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as keel-billed and chestnut-mandibled toucans, fiery-billed aracaris, oropendolas, parakeets, parrots, herons, egrets, and many others making their home here.
