Embark on a journey through this extensive system of natural and artificial waterways, where each scenic boat ride unveils a breathtaking variety of wildlife. Bird enthusiasts will find Tortuguero a magical destination, home to over 400 species, making it an extraordinary spot for bird watching. This exceptional natural setting offers an immersive experience in one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse regions.

Tortuguero Canal – Wildlife, Flora and Fauna

Tortuguero is a sanctuary for an incredible variety of wildlife, boasting over 50 amphibian species, more than 100 reptile species, and 50 different mammals. Over 400 bird species reside in or migrate throughout the year through Tortuguero. Birdwatchers often spot parrots, keel-billed toucans, slaty-tailed trogons, and numerous oropendolas.

The Tortuguero canal is a bustling ecosystem, teeming with life. It’s common to see herons, egrets, kingfishers, anhingas, jacanas, and other wildlife. Frequently observed creatures include basilisk lizards, bats, sloths, iguanas, various poison dart frogs, and howler, white-faced, and spider monkeys, showcasing the incredible diversity and abundance of life in this unique habitat.

You may find tracks of river otters, collared peccaries, and Baird’s tapirs along the riverbanks and canals. The waterways are inhabited by caimans, garfish, manatees, crocodiles, crustaceans, and occasionally bull sharks.

About Cahuita National Park

Cahuita National Park, located on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, was established in 1978 and remains the only national park in the country that relies entirely on donations. These funds are used to maintain the park’s pristine condition, protect wildlife, and ensure the safety of visitors.

Our experienced tour guides offer a range of adventurous activities, including wildlife tours, hiking, and trekking. The park is also home to the largest fringing coral reef in Costa Rica’s Caribbean, which is protected and can only be accessed with a licensed tour guide. This reef, stretching 5 km from Punta Cahuita’s western side to the east, features three barriers and is separated from the shore by 100 meters to 2 miles.

The coral reef is a nesting ground for sea turtles and teeming with marine life. When snorkeling or scuba diving, you’ll encounter over 240 aquatic species, including tropical fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, manta rays, and even three types of sharks. The reef boasts at least 35 species of coral, over 120 fish species, and numerous mollusks and crustaceans.

About Cahuita National Park Wildlife

Cahuita National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife. Among the more commonly seen mammals are armadillos, raccoons, sloths, howler monkeys, and capuchin monkeys. The park also boasts a variety of reptiles and amphibians, including blue jeans dart frogs, red-eyed leaf frogs, green iguanas, whip-tailed lizards, green vine snakes, and boa constrictors.

One of the most striking reptiles is the yellow eyelash pit viper, known for its vivid golden-yellow color.
The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with species such as keel-billed and chestnut-mandibled toucans, fiery-billed aracaris, oropendolas, parakeets, parrots, herons, egrets, and many others making their home here.

About Cahuita National Park Flora

Cahuita National Park is rich in diverse flora, with distinct ecosystems on either side of the park. The swamp forest, ancient trees, and abundant bird species make it a must-see destination. In the poorly drained lowland areas, where the ground is firmer than in typical swamps, you’ll find wooded swamps featuring buttressed Pteropus trees and a variety of palms, all draped in thick lianas. This habitat is home to species like the Green Ibis, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, and Green-and-rufous Kingfisher.

Much of the evergreen swamp forest remains underwater for most of the year, where decaying vegetation and poor drainage lead to tannin-rich waters, creating the signature “Backwaters.” Thankfully, a long elevated walkway has been built above the forest floor, offering a unique way to explore and experience this neotropical rainforest.
